NIHR Infrastructure cancer & nutrition_NOCRI conference workshop

Please find below a letter signed by Professor Alan Jackson describing a new NIHR infrastructure collaboration initiative in cancer & nutrition, lead by the Southampton BRC and supported by NOCRI. The collaboration welcomes expressions of interest from relevant individuals and organisations and invites you to attend a workshop at the forthcoming NOCRI conference on November 4th in Liverpool which explains the initiative in more detail.

Dear Colleague,

Re: Cancer & Nutrition NIHR infrastructure collaboration

Cancer now represents the major cause of mortality in the UK, and nutritional factors play an
important role in the prevention, development and treatment of cancer. While the UK has
internationally competitive research in both nutrition and cancer, there is only a relatively small
amount on the overlap between the two areas.

The Department of Health (DH), through the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) and its
NIHR Office for Clinical Research Infrastructure (NOCRI) has recognised the need to develop a
national interdisciplinary research strategy to bring coherence to existing activities and provide
a coordinated framework as a basis for future research.

The Southampton BRC has been tasked with carrying out a mapping exercise to capture the existing
work on nutrition and cancer in the UK and develop a strategic approach to further translational
research. We are seeking to bring together relevant and interested parties to start to consider how
different aspects of the current work in nutrition and cancer might better inform each other to
help determine complementarities, and define opportunities for collaborative working.

Contributors to this initiative will be part of a forum for discussion which will help to develop
and shape the research strategy and identify research priorities. To begin, we would like to invite
expressions of interest from relevant individuals and organisations. We would appreciate it if you
could identify someone at your organisation to act as a contact for this project and if you could
share this information with Arabella Hayter, Project Manager for the Nutrition and Cancer NIHR
infrastructure collaboration, by emailing her on cancer_nutrition@nihr.ac.uk at your earliest
convenience.

We will be running a workshop at the 2014 National Cancer Research Initiative (NCRI) conference in Liverpool on Tuesday 4th November, 8.00 – 8.45am. We will be providing an update on the initial mapping exercise and inviting all interested bodies, institutions and individuals to engage with this initiative, with a view to forming a community of relevant stakeholders as the basis for interdisciplinary work. We would greatly appreciate your support and attendance at this event. If you have any questions for the panel which you would like to submit in advance of the event, please send them to Arabella at cancer_nutrition@nihr.ac.uk

We look forward to working with you on this initiative.
Yours sincerely,
Professor Alan Jackson
Director, NIHR Southampton Biomedical Research Centre
